Having proven his ability to carry a film on his shoulders and made a lot of money in the process of doing so, Akshay Kumar is ready to dabble with film production. Driven by nationalistic fervor, his ambition is to produce 'world-class cinema in India.'
The action star uses action-speak to explain why he is adding film production to his repertoire.
"I think it's finally time that I took the leap, so I've decided to throw myself in the deep end," Akshay told TOI.
The 'deep end' probably comes from Akshay's recent filming of underwater sequences for the climax for this forthcoming film Eight By Ten, a supernatural thriller directed by Nagesh Kukunoor.
"The past 18 years in the industry have been a great learning experience and I think I have enough knowledge to attempt my own production house," Akshay continues.
"I have proven my mettle as a hard-working and dedicated actor and now I want to channelise the same force in providing world-class cinema in India."
Akshay's first film as a producer will be directed by a debutant but he has no apprehensions.
"Even as an actor, I've always been open to working with new directors. In fact, some of my biggest hits have been with new directors. So, I think it's only fair that we give deserving talent a fair chance," he says
The Jallandhar born son of a government employee recollects his own humble beginning. He learnt martial arts in Bangkok and worked there as a chef before coming to Bombay and struggling as an actor for years.
"It's my way of giving back something to the industry. After all, I can never forget my days of struggle," he says.
Askhay is currently filming for the action comedy Chandni Chowk To China directed by Nikhil Advani.
The film's script borrows from Akshay's own life and tells the story of a lowly cook who is mistaken for a martial arts hero and sent to China.
Akshay Kumar trained in parkour for six months under trainer Daniel from Liverpool in preparation for the film.
