The award is in recognition of his exceptional career as well as his contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in cinema, a French Embassy statement here said.
Among others, George Clooney, Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Jude Law have been recipients of this distinction, as well as Arundhati Roy and Sharmila Tagore.
The honour will be bestowed on Shah Rukh by French Ambassador Jrme Bonnafont at the inauguration ceremony of 'Rendezvous with French cinema', the first French festival across India.
The festival will showcase the latest production of an innovative, diverse and dynamic French film industry through Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and New Delhi from January 27 to February 14.
''Shah Rukh Khan belongs to this new and dynamic generation of movie actors who, beyond stunning performances, embodies the heart and soul of modern India,'' Mr Bonnafont said.
Shah Rukh will become the second superstar after Amitabh Bachchan to be honoured by the French government. In January last year, the French government bestowed its highest civilian award, Legion d'Honneur, on Amitabh Bachchan for his contribution to Indian and international cultural life.
